MUMBAI: Malwan boy Ashish Zantye, with an all-India rank (AIR) of 19 and a 710 score, bagged the top position in Maharashtra in NEET 2020. Four students from Maharashtra, made it the top 50 ranks. The state had the highest number of aspirants taking the exam in the country at close to two lakh, of whom 40.9% qualified. With an easy paper and students scoring higher marks this year though, the cut-offs for medical colleges are expected to head north.
Zantye told TOI he aspires to be a radiologist or to get into non-clinical research in molecular biology. “I plan to join either AIIMS Delhi or KEM Hospital,” he said. Zantye studied at Waradkar English Medium School and Junior College in Katta in Malwan and used to travel to his coaching class in Goa on weekends. “One needs to focus on the exam, if I had lost out on even two questions, I would have been out of the Top 50 ranks,” said Zantye who belongs to a family of doctors-his mother is a gynaecologist and father a general physician.
The state’s success rate has improved marginally to 40.9% from last year’s 39.3%. Its performance, though, is among the worst, second only to Nagaland 40.5% and much lower than 56.4% nationally.
Tejomoy Vaidya from Pune, and Parth Kadam and Ashish Bellarge bagged the 43rd, 45th and 46th ranks, respectively, in the state. In Mumbai, Rahul Kothari and Anuj Doshi stood 92nd and 98th, respectively. Sudha Shenoy, a parent representative, said cut-offs in even private colleges could close at over 500.
