- Krunal Pandya has been a vital cog in Mumbai Indians set up over the years

- The all-rounder said he was looking forward to making a comeback in Team India
The year is 2020, an even year. Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI), who have won a record four IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, have been in brilliant form in IPL 2020 being held in UAE and are one of the top contenders for the title in 2020. In a side that boasts of several world-class players, the role of Krunal Pandya goes unnoticed. The all-rounder, who was adjudged Man of the Match in IPL 2017 final won by MI, continues to play small cameos and bowl economical spells for his team.
While most of the other franchises have found it difficult to get going in UAE, MI seem to be a smooth-running machine in IPL 2020 despite different conditions in UAE. When asked about the secret behind Mumbai’s success in IPL 2020, Krunal said that the results achieved were due to the preparation the team went through in the last few months.
“I guess the preparation – that’s where we were very good. Before coming here, there was a camp for one month where all the players were together and were preparing for the tournament. In Mumbai, we were practising together. Everyone has been together for the last 3-4 months so it has helped as well to know each other individually. So whatever you see on the field is a result of the preparation that went going into the tournament,” Krunal said in response to a query from timesnownews.com.
Mumbai Indians look settled under Rohit Sharma – who remains to be the most successful IPL captains and one of the most inspiring leaders in world cricket. Talking about what makes Rohit a special captain, Krunal said, “His biggest quality is that he allows you to back your strength which is very important as a bowler. He doesn’t complicate things. He backs you to do whatever you do. That’s what makes him a special captain.”
Despite featuring regularly in the Mumbai Indians squad, Krunal last played for India in November 2019. Krunal, who has represented the Indian cricket team in 18 matches, said he had done well with whatever chances he was given and is looking forward to making a comeback in the senior side.
“Definitely I want to make a comeback. But if you see, whatever games I played for India, I really played well. I have roughly played 18 games in a year’s time. I did well in terms of bowling. I got Man of the Match in New Zealand, Australia and West Indies as well as the Man of the Series award in West Indies. Overall, I was very happy with the way I went with my journey for the Indian team. So with the way I have performed in the IPL in the last 4-5 years and with the way the season is going, I am looking forward to making a comeback,” the 29-year-old said.
In IPL 2020, Krunal has played 8 matches for Mumbai where he has picked 5 wickets. With the bat, while he has not got many chances, he was impressive during his 4-ball 20* against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
