MUMBAI: The Mumbai University has decided to replace its technology partner, roped in to conduct exams of Institute of Open and Distance Learning (IDOL). Instead, two technology partners, at least one of which has proved successful in conducting college-level exams, are being considered.
The decision to sign agreements with two agencies comes as university authorities feel the companies can work separately with the two largest cohort of students: Commerce and Arts candidates. Smaller batches of students, those from streams such as the sciences, will take exams on Google Forms. Interestingly, the two partners to be appointed by the varsity were not enlisted by MU’s technical committee, nor were they among the three shortlisted and presented to the purchase committee, which handles all commercials.
“The university has finalized two new service providers to conduct online exams. Accordingly, we must prepare all QBs in Excel format. We all will have to provide all papers final QBs of BA and MA by tomorrow evening,” said a principal’s message. Meanwhile, the EdTech company engaged to take the IDOL exams, Littlemore Innovation Labs, continues to execute exams of the university departments, putting 850-900 students through the final exam each day.
LMI has sought questions from teachers in Word format. After LMI, the other two companies shortlisted by the university were Edutech and WeShine Tech.
After two days of chaos in conducting IDOL exams for 8,000-9,000 students, the company claimed its servers were attacked and hence the disruption. “Now, we want to ensure exams are conducted smoothly. So, we are working with two new companies,” said a source.
But proctoring is no longer a part of essentials in the brief given to these companies. MU plans to sign two fresh agreements on Sunday.
MU has told colleges to appoint five faculty members from self-financing courses of Commerce who can assist the university in conducting mock tests, as also online BCom and MCom exam for IDOL. “Pl issue a strong letter to VC, DHE, Governor… it’s a extreme failure of world’s oldest university… Officers has no vision, …Already lot of damage has taken place of university… why the Govt and Governor… appoint one senior IAS officer to look after this university…” said a college head.
Many IDOL faculty appointments are awaiting renewal. In a letter to MU, Mumbai University and College Teachers’ Association general secretary Subhash Athwale said, “It is learned that most teachers who are in IDOL have run out of appointments. Salaries of these teachers have been pending for four months.” MUCTA demanded reappointment of temporary/contractual teachers and immediate payment of pending salaries.
