‘Gully Boy’, ‘Udta Punjab’ & ‘Raazi’: Everytime Alia Bhatt Set The Screen On Fire
A Star Is Born
Actress Alia Bhatt is no stranger to filmdom. Being born to filmy parents – her father Mahesh Bhatt has produced and directed blockbusters in the ’90s while her mother Soni Razdan has been a versatile actress – it was natural that she follow in their footsteps.
Thus it was no surprise when at 19, she made a stunning debut in Karan Johar’s ‘Student Of The Year’ in 2012. The film, a teeny-bopper romance, went on to become a runaway hit – and Alia Bhatt had arrived.
Seven years and 12 movies after ruling the silver screen as the leading lady, she has made a mark for herself with her acting, vivaciousness and versatility. With ‘Kalank’ and ‘Brahmastra’ lined up for release later this year, there’s hope among her fans that she will be able to strike gold, again, at the box-office.
As she turns 26, we take a look at all the films where she made an impression.
In 2014 ‘Highway’, Alia Bhatt played the character of a city girl, Veera Tripathi, who gets kidnapped by a truck driver (played by Randeep Hooda), and the two start developing a strong emotional bond with each other. The actress won the Filmfare Critics Award in the ‘Best Actress’ category for her performance in the film.
2016 was a great year for Alia Bhatt, as three movies ‘Kapoor & Sons’, ‘Udta Punjab’ and ‘Dear Zindagi’, starring the actress in the lead roles. Her performance as Bauria (aka Mary Jane) in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Udta Punjab’ won her critical acclaim. The actress also won the Filmfare Award and International Indian Film Academy Awards in the ‘Best Actress’ category the same year.
This was the first time that Alia Bhatt worked alongside the King Khan of Bollywood. While the actress didn’t bag an award, critics praised her and co-star Shah Rukh Khan for their performances in ‘Dear Zindagi’ that focused mainly on mental health.
‘Raazi’, based on author Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel ‘Calling Sehmat’, struck the right chord amongst the audience and instilled a sense of patriotism in Indians. The film earned over Rs 158 crore domestically, and become Alia Bhatt’s highest-grossing film in 2018, surpassing Varun Dhawan-starrer ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’.
