- BCCI announced India’s ODI, Test and T20I squads for Australia tour on Monday
- Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma were not named in the squads due to respective injuries
- Kartik Tyagi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Ishan Porel will also travel to Australia with the Indian squad
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Test, ODI and T20I squads for Team India’s tour of Australia on Monday. The squads were announced by the national selection panel headed by former spinner Sunil Joshi. The tour will get underway in November with the white-ball leg consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is followed by a four-match Test series.
BCCI has named a jumbo squad that will be travelling to Australia post the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in UAE. Along with the main squads for the three formats, young pacers Kartik Tyagi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, T Natarajan and Ishan Porel will also be travelling to Australia with the rest of the squad as reserve pacers.
Tyagi was one of the standout performers for India in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year and has showcased his skills in the IPL 2020. He has been impressive for Rajasthan Royals and has picked up seven wickets in eight matches. Kamlesh Nagarkoti has also made a strong comeback for Kolkata Knight Riders after injury-plagued last two seasons in IPL.
Natrajan meanwhile, has established himself as one of the vital cogs in the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling line-up. Known for his excellent yorkers, Natarajan has been brilliant in the death overs for SRH in the absence of senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He has 11 wickets in 11 matches so far this season.
All three of Natarajan, Nagarkoti and Tyagi have been rewarded for their IPL performances along with Porel, who is part of the Kings XI Punjab side but is yet to get his first game for the KL Rahul-led side. With senior pacers Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar not in the squads due to injuries, the four reserve pacers will be sharing the workload with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Umesh Yadav in the nets.
In ODIs, Bumrah and Shami will spearhead the pace attack and will have support from Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur, who have had a good IPL season so far. However, Team India lacks a fast-bowling all-rounder in ODIs as Hardik Pandya has not bowled at all in IPL 2020 and has played as a specialist batsman for Mumbai Indians.
In T20Is, Deepak Chahar and Saini will partner Bumrah and Shami in the pace attack. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has received his maiden national call up making the cut in the T20I squad for the Australia series. In Tests, Mohammed Siraj has been included as the fifth pacer after Shami, Bumrah, Saini, and Umesh.
