In India, women have been ruling the roost in business for quite some time and their inclusion in numerous lists of young achievers or self-made rich and powerful people further establishes the same. Recently, Fortune India honoured as many as 50 women from varied industries and sectors of the country, for creating an impact in the world with their business acumen and social and cultural influence. We’re talking about Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women in Business in 2020. Out of all these names, there were three that caught our attention. These three women have been leading the entertainment industry for quite some time and as per this list are the most powerful women in the Indian entertainment industry.
From Anushka Sharma to Priyanka Chopra Jonas, 3 most powerful women in business in the entertainment industry
1. Priyanka Chopra Jonas
In 2018, she featured in Forbes list of Power Women 2018. This year, she made her debut in the list of Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women in Business and ranked 37 in the list. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is currently counted among the most successful and influential celebrities in the world. Apart from being an established actor, the 38-year-old global icon is also a successful entrepreneur who runs her own production company. In 2015, she founded her production company called Purple Pebble Pictures that has produced numerous movies in Hindi, Marathi, Sikkimese and Punjabi, some of which even went on to win National Film Awards. In 2018, she became a tech investor after she invested in the dating app Bumble, which according to Fortune India registered over 2 million users, within a year of its launch in India.
Last year, she was featured in Forbes India’s 2019 Celebrity 100 list with an annual earning of ₹23.4 crores. And this year, according to a report in Filmfare, her net worth is estimated to be around $50 million, with an annual income of approximately ₹73 crores. As per a Hindustan Times report, she also signed a “two-year multimillion-dollar first-look television deal” with Amazon Studios, in July 2020. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who will soon be seen in The White Tiger, is married to singer-actor Nick Jonas and the couple currently stays in Los Angeles, where they own a luxurious mansion worth a staggering ₹144 crores.
2. Anushka Sharma
In 2008, Anushka Sharma made her debut in Bollywood with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Fast forward to the present time and she’s one of highest-paid celebrities in India and a self-made superstar, who has delivered countless hits like PK, NH10, Sui Dhaaga and more. Anushka Sharma has an impeccable business acumen and it reflects in her successful entrepreneurial journey. In 2013, Anushka Sharma founded a production company with her brother Karnesh Ssingh called Clean Slate Filmz, which released two projects this year, both of which received an immensely positive response from critics and fans – Paatal Lok on Amazon Prime Video and Bulbbul on Netflix. Apart from her production house, Anushka Sharma also successfully runs her own clothing line called Nush. In February, 2020, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli were in news for investing ₹2.2 crore in an insurance startup called Digit. With an enormous net worth, comes an equally lavish lifestyle for the actor that includes luxury cars Audi Q8, Bentley Flying Spur and Land Rover Range Rover Vogue SE; a ₹34 crore plush residence in Mumbai, an ₹80 crore apartment in Gurgaon among other things. 3. Ekta Kapoor
Often touted as the queen of Indian television, Ekta Kapoor has been single-handedly ruling the television industry and Bollywood as a producer and director. Recipient of Padma Shri award, the 45-year-old Joint Managing Director of Balaji Telefilms is often counted among the most powerful and influential businesswomen in India. In 2012, she was featured in Forbes Asia Power Businesswomen list at the age of 36. This year, she was recognised by Fortune India as one of the most powerful women in business in 2020, thanks to the success of her digital platform ALT Balaji that she launched in 2017. According to Fortune India, under her leadership, her TV business registered an 18 per cent prime time viewership share and as of March, 2020, the total revenue of the OTT platform went up to ₹77 crores. While it’s tough to put a particular number to her net worth, her annual salary seems to be around ₹2.5 crores as Economic Times reported in July 2020 that Ekta Kapoor is forgoing her one-year salary of ₹2.5 crores to financially help her colleagues and employees at Balaji Telefilms.
