Given the protocols and number of restrictions, several IPL franchises had decided against allowing the family members of the players to travel to UAE. Mumbai Indians (MI) was probably the only franchise that allowed all the family members of all players to accompany them.
The family members of players stayed in UAE for the complete duration of the league. And as per Suryakumar Yadav, a member of MI, it made a difference.
In a conversation with The Indian Express, Suryakumar heaped praise on MI and said that the franchise knew that the family was important.
“Many teams didn’t allow families but MI even allowed kids to be there. MI understood why family was important. They understood that players need someone who can give them the mental support once they are back from the game. It was a big group,” he told The Indian Express.
“People go by what they see on the ground but what happens behind the scenes matters. I could feel the difference in our performance because we were all happy.”
While a few players from other franchises did talk about the challenges of staying in isolation, there were no such talks from MI’s players. The five-time champions were the most dominant team in the tournament.
With nine wins from 14 matches, MI finished the league stage at the top spot. They defeated Delhi Capitals in the first Qualifier and booked a berth in the final.
In the summit clash, MI had no issues in chasing down the target of 157 to lift their fifth IPL title. They are now one of the two teams who have defended the IPL title.
As for Suryakumar, he had a memorable season and scored 480 runs. It was for the third consecutive season that he scored over 400 runs. Even though he missed out on earning his maiden India call-up, he is in the scheme of things and is likely to don the national jersey soon.
